Three Sisters Springs

Three springs. One wildlife refuge. Manatees who made a group decision.


Three Sisters Springs is three interconnected spring pools inside the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, and at some point the West Indian manatees decided these pools were their personal hot tubs and that has not changed. Hundreds of manatees converge here November through March when the Gulf waters cool and the 72-degree spring water becomes the warmest thing for miles. You swim with them. They don't mind.

The whole system is federally protected, which is exactly why it's still this good. No motorized boats allowed in the spring complex. Access is by kayak, paddleboard, or the refuge's own pontoon. The result is a genuinely wild, genuinely quiet manatee sanctuary where the biggest sound is the water and occasionally a manatee surfacing six feet from your face.

Outside manatee season, Three Sisters is still strikingly beautiful — gin-clear water over white sand, surrounded by vegetation so lush it looks filtered. She doesn't need the manatees to carry her. They just make her legendary.

WHAT TO BRING

  • Snorkel mask and wetsuit (November–March — the water feels cold without one)

  • Underwater camera — seriously, get one

  • Kayak or book a guided paddle tour from Crystal River outfitters

  • Patience — manatees move on their own schedule

BEST TIME TO VISIT

November through March for manatee season. Arrive early — the spring complex gets busy mid-morning. Weekdays are significantly less crowded than weekends.

INSIDER TIPS

  • Book a guided snorkel/paddle tour through a Crystal River outfitter — they know where the manatees are and handle the logistics.

  • Passive observation only: no chasing, no corralling, no blocking a manatee's path to the surface. They need to breathe.

  • The Kings Bay area around Three Sisters has multiple other spring vents worth exploring — ask your guide.

  • Manatee season ends around late March/early April when Gulf temps warm up and they migrate back out.

CONSERVATION NOTE

LEAVE HER BETTER THAN YOU FOUND HER  //  West Indian manatees are a federally protected threatened species. The behavior rules here are federal law, not suggestions. Passive observation means you float and let the manatee approach you — not the other way around. Crystal River is one of the most important manatee sanctuaries in the world. The reason it still works is because the rules are enforced and people follow them.
