Weeki Wachee Springs

Home of actual mermaids. Florida is not a normal place.

Let's get this straight: Weeki Wachee Springs is a state park where trained human performers do synchronized underwater ballet in mermaid tails through a 16-foot-deep spring window and have been doing it since 1947. This is real. This is Florida. She's been unhinged since before unhinged was a personality trait.

The spring itself pumps 117 million gallons per day at a constant 74 degrees. After the show, you can kayak or paddleboard the Weeki Wachee River, swim at Buccaneer Bay waterpark, or take a river boat cruise through one of the most unspoiled river corridors on Florida's Gulf Coast. The manatees did not get the memo that this is a theme park and show up whenever they feel like it.

She's theatrical. She's campy. She's completely sincere about all of it. There is nowhere else like this on earth.

  • Towels — the waterpark portion actually gets you wet

  • Camera because the mermaid show is exactly as wild as you're imagining

Summer for peak show schedule and Buccaneer Bay. Spring and fall for quieter river paddling. Manatees are most reliably spotted November through March when they come in for the warm spring water.

INSIDER TIPS

  • Arrive early — mermaid show seats fill up, especially the weekend performances.

  • The river kayak rental puts you directly on the Weeki Wachee River, which is genuinely gorgeous and wild beyond the park boundaries.

  • If you see manatees, maintain 50 feet distance and do not attempt to touch them. They are protected. They are also enormous.

  • The gift shop mermaid merchandise is 10/10 and you should not resist it.

CONSERVATION NOTE

LEAVE HER BETTER THAN YOU FOUND HER  //  Weeki Wachee River is one of the few remaining undeveloped river corridors on Florida's Gulf Coast. The spring ecosystem here is fragile and directly connected to the Gulf. No motorized boats on the spring run. No feeding the fish. The manatees are federally protected — observe and keep distance.
